San Francisco Trip 2005 - D
Early Friday morning, the sun (looking back east) begins to rise, as we're moving through, perhaps, Nevada
I can dimly make out some mountains parallel to us, across a wide flat expanse of land.
Sun climbs higher
As we speed across the frozen desert...
I have breakfast (french toast, bacon) with the same Berkeley couple I had lunch with in the Rockies
I'm told these are not the Sierra Nevadas
Here's Rhonda and her 8-week son Antonus; she and her husband are returning from Illinois to Berkeley
Snowy desert
I'm on the lounge car while Faye does housekeeping on our sleeper car.
Occasional outcroppings few and far between in our desert journey
Sometimes almost complete white-out
I retreat to #12, where I doze while the same landscape passes by
Self-portrait of dozing on the lower bunk (yes, I'm Acting).
We stop to pass a freight train, abandoned in the snow.
At times we're only going 20 mph due to frozen switches. Sometimes they have to get out and manually throw the switches.
Infrequent civilization
We make it to Sparks Nevada, just east of Reno. Heavy snow still falling, but at least it's not the snowy desert view we've seen all day.
I poke the camera through a window while waiting in Sparks
